if you are doing any traveling along the peninsula right now, maybe dropping off picking up over by sfo this is what it looks like near third and it continues to move well into san bruno. check of the east bay now 880 so far, so good. and still bart and all mass transit on time. that's your latest "kcbs traffic." back to you guys. new this morning, two earthquakes were felt in the gilroy area overnight. the second was 3.7. both centered about four miles south, southeast of gilroy. no reports of damage or injuries. the holiday shipping season is officially on. right now delivery workers are gearing up for their busiest day of the year. cbs 5 reporter mark kelly joins us now from a fedex facility in san francisco that could see more packages than ever. >> reporter: michelle, the companies that study this sort of thing say this holiday season is going to be bigger

and better than ever. in fact, fedex predicts today will be the busiest shipping in its history moving 22 million boxes in a single day. now, compare that to its second busiest day so far. 19.9million boxes. that was last year on december 17th. that's a big increase from just last year. so what's driving all this? the company is pointing to all that online shopping that folks are doing these days. remember, today is cyber monday. fedex says talking worldwide, online shopping is three to four times the rate of traditional store shopping. of course, someone has to ship all those online purchases and that's where fedex is seeing these record numbers coming in. here's some more positive economic news. a company called emarketer crunched the numbers for online shopping and they predict that online sales during the holidays are going to continue

to jump 15 times year after year, live in san francisco, telling kehl kpix 5. >> the national retail -- mark kelly, kpix 5. >> the national retail federation says holiday sales could hit $602 billion this year. thousands of commuters are taking buses around the scene of a train derailment in new york city over the weekend. investigators worked through the night to clear the tracks to be sure no other victims were left in the wreckage. four passengers killed yesterday morning when the train just ran off the tracks on a sweeping curve in the bronx. >> they will know the speed the train was traveling. they will also know if the engineer was attempting to apply the brakes or not. they will also know if the brakes were working. >> some of the passengers said the train seemed to be going a lot faster than usual right before the crash. a freight train derailed in the same area in the summer in july. investigators will be looking for possible connections between the two accidents. new this morning, automation in the cockpit is

coming under scrutiny by federal safety experts. the ntsb plans a two-day hearing next week on the deadly asiana airline crash at sfo in july. that plane came in too low and too slow as it approached while on automatic pilot. safety experts are war worried pilots relied too much on automation and would have trouble taking over in an emergency. a toddler trapped under water for more than 10 minutes doing miraculously well this morning. this little boy fell into this murky green pond in vallejo when fishing with his grandmother on saturday. she jumped in after him but couldn't find him. she called 911 and firefighter dean strohmeyer found the boy in a -- diane strohmeyer found the boy in a drainage pipe. her partner performed cpr. 24 hours later news got back to the firehouse the boy is doing well. >> wow, it is the best early christmas present that all of us could possibly imagine. >> firefighters say the cold

water most likely saved the boy's life. the toddler's grandmother treated for hype therm is expected to recover. the santa rosa teen shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy may have a memorial park created in his honor. sonoma county lawmakers will meet tomorrow to discuss requests from the community. a deputy shot 13-year-old andy lopez in october because he mistook the teen's bb gun for an ak-47 assault rifle. tonight an east bay school district will hold a meeting to address policies on bullying and harassment after a fight at hercules high school ended up on youtube. it shows three female students attacking a fourth punching and hair pulling. one of the those involved is identifies as transgender. tonight's meeting happens at 6:30 at the [ non-english language ] middle school in richmond. it looks like bart's two biggest unions will sue the transit agency over their contract dispute. the "san francisco examiner" reports a union official said they are working out the

details and a suit could be filed this week. the issue is the tentative contract that union members approved in october. bart directors also approved it. but first, they removed a family leave provision. >> state lawmakers starting the day off with a raise. an independent p.m. panel approved the 5.3% bump over the summer. it's meant to restore part of the paycuts made during the recession. lawmakers will earn about an extra 5 grand a year. >> that's after we took a 23% cut in the last few years appropriately by an independent commission, we don't get to do this. >> about a dozen lawmakers plan to turn it down. no bay area lawmakers are on the list. even before this raise, though, california lawmakers were the highest paid in the nation but they don't receive pensions. the white house's self- imposed deadline has passed for the healthcare website to start working. reporter susan mcginnis has a check-up on the site that's become a political sore spot for the obama administration. >> reporter: the white house

says 50,000 people can now log on to healthcare.gov all at the same time. >> we have a much more stable system that's reliably open for business. >> reporter: jeffrey, who leads the president's website repair team, said in a conference call this weekend that after more than 400 bump fixes and software -- bug fixes and software upgrades, the obama administration met its goal a working site for the vast majority of users. >> the site is stable and operating at intended capacity with greatly improved performance. >> reporter: response times have improved from 8 seconds in late october to less than 1 second. error rates have gone from 6% to less than 1%. democrats applaud the progress. >> hopefully we are going to have americans get access to the healthcare they need. >> reporter: republicans argue once consumers get in, they won't like what they see. >> most americans are going to find a less dynamic health system. they are going to find that the cost of the healthcare that they must purchase is going to

boulevard and jerrold avenue. the victims name is not released and no description of the killer. muni is reminding riders to keeper belongings and purses close over the holiday shopping season. the san francisco transit agency says robberies and cell phones snatchings are a big problem on the buses. muni wants people coming into the city to shop be aware of your surroundings. cops will patrol malls in fremont. teams of bicycle officers are cover areas throughout the city on the weekends until the end of the month. a little boy trapped under water for more than 10 minutes but as brian webb tells us the boy's age and the water itself may have helped save his life. reporter: it was a typical saturday afternoon at vallejo fire station 23 when a 911 call came in from one district over. but when a little boy is drowning, you don't worry about the address. >> i actually was working out in the gym so i was in a t- shirt and shorts.

>> reporter: a 2-year-old had fallen in this pond while fishing with his grandmother. she couldn't find him after searching for nearly 10 minutes. when diane arrived, she jumped in and spotted the boy in a drain pipe on her second dive. >> he actually had drifted underneath the road and was suspended so i saw the white t- shirt, grabbed him and stood on the bottom, raised my hands up and handed him off. >> like an overpass. >> reporter: this apprentice firefighter started chest compression and prayers. >> when it's a pediatric, it's an eerie feeling because you never know the outcome. >> reporter: the water right here is 5 feet deep and very cold. that along with the fact this boy is very young probably saved his life. >> incredibly cold which that gives the child a way better chance of having the least amount of deficits or making a full recovery. >> reporter: 24 hours later, word reached the crew the boy was doing better, so much he is

expected to make a full recovery. >> wow! it is the best early christmas present that all of us could possibly imagine. >> reporter: just another day on the job at fire station 23 saving lives along the way. brian webb, kpix 5. >> the toddler's grandmother was also treated for hypothermia. she will make a full recovery, as well. happening today the oakland teen who was set on fire on the ac transit bus will return to school finally. luke "sasha" fleischman is a senior at maybeck high school in berkeley. he returned home last week after being treated for second- and third-degree burns. police sat the attack on november 4 was partially motivated by homophobia. speed is the focus of the investigation into the crash that killed fast and furious actor paul walker and a friend in southern california. grieving fans are creating a memorial at the scene of saturday's crash in valencia.

the 40-year-old walker was a passenger in his friend's porsche when they slammed into a pole. a costar cried when he visited the crash site. [ crying ] >> gibson placed a single flower at the sited where fans have been holding -- at the site where fans have been holding vigils. universal pictures is not saying what it will do with "fast & furious" 7 due out next summer. new details on the helicopter crash in scotland. authorities found another body bringing the number of killed to nine. the police chopper crashed through the roof of a crowded pub in glasgow on friday night. three people died on board and six pub. there may be more victims in the rubble. this morning, thousands of commuters in new york city are riding buses now past a scene of a deadly train derailment in

the bronx. cbs correspondent marlie hall now with more. reporter: investigators worked through the night at the scene of a seven-car commuter train derailment that killed four and injured more than 60. >> that car you see in your screen now, that was tipped over on its side yesterday partially. it's uprighted . >> reporter: the investigation appears to center around how fast the train was moving as it reached a curve in the bronx just north of manhattan. a lawmakers tells cbs news the train's engineer, william rockefeller, jr., told rescuers he tried to apply the brakes but they weren't working. the ntsb recovered data recorders which should tell the story. >> they will know the speed that the train was traveling. they will also know if the engineer was attempting to apply the brakes or not. they will also know if the brakes were working. >> reporter: the train came to a stop just feet from where the hudson and harlem rivers meet. some passengers say they thought they were going to plunge into the water. >> i thought i'm going to die.

>> reporter: this passenger says people were tossed around like rag dolls. >> i can see some people flying from my left side to the right side. >> reporter: james lovell is among the dead. his 17-year-old son posted this message online: this feels like an awful nightmare that i can't wake up from. rest easy, dad. i love you. marlie hall for cbs news, the bronx, new york. >> that train carried about 150 passengers and was about half full when it derailed. a california couple's family is meeting with detectives today after the two vanished under mysterious circumstances. the two from sacramento went fishing on the delta thanksgiving afternoon. hours later, their boat was found empty still running and going around in circles. the coast guard and deputies searched but found no trace of the two. their family worries someone might have hurt them. >> it's just really nice people. they have no enemy, nothing like that. i'm still hoping that they
